Vie refused to live a life of regret. She had decided that very early, perhaps as young as five: certainly by the time her father stopped hiding his affairs, and long before the many holidays she spent alone or watching her parents drink themselves past arguing. Vie refused to regret anything because her paren'ts seemed so good at it. She would not let that be her inheritance.

Still, as she stepped out of the rider's quarters and felt the cold air slip into her lungs she wondered if she should regret entering this competition. While she was traveling the world she had learned to deal with snow--it was even romantic, under the right circumstances, such as looking out a window at the Swiss Alps while enjoying a warm fire. This was a different thing entirely. Asgard was colder than cold. The promotional materials said it would be a balmy -6 degrees for the competition. And to think this was summer!

Vie sauntered into the cat stalls. Argo caught sight of her and yowled, no doubt hoping she would rescue him. Jaspar glanced up from where she was finishing attaching a set of racing boots. "He isn't a fan of elk hide and mountain goat, turns out."  Vie started checking over the tack, admiring the red fabric and the heavy fur-lined racing tack. Jaspar ducked under Argo's stomach and grinned. "Pays to have friends in Montana, huh? Jim and his wife send their regards, by the way, and they said we should bring the cats up to train because they practically live in Canada and do you know how cold it gets in Canada?"

Argo turned to bump his head against Vie, purring low in his throat. He was still purring when they got to the starting line an hour later, warmed up but not warm. Even with all the layers both the cat and handler were feeling the chill. Hopefully the race would warm them up. As they hurtled along at over one hundred miles an hour, under a glorious ice bridge...Vie knew her record of no regrets was still going strong.
